Spring has finally arrived and its time to take advantage of the warmer outdoor weather. I recently shot with Kate, who moved from the UK to Canada to start her acting career. In order to keep the picture as natural as possible, I opt for minimal retouching as seen below. I simply clean up her skin and apply dodging and burning to bring out her facial features. For all you techies out there, the image was shot with a canon 5d mk2 with a sigma 50 1.4 using natural light.

Makeup shoot

The concept of this makeup shoot is red, in contrast to the cold and white Canadian winter that we are having here. Model was Joyce and make up and hair were done by Karol. The lighting setup is very simple – one light positioned left of the camera. The background was a wall that I turn into white during post-processing.

Strobist test

The original plan was to shoot outdoor during sunset, but it was a cloudy day and there was barely any sunlight coming through. So I decided to switch gear and do some simple head shots instead. The model is Dora and she has an angular face that I want to capture. The setup is just one light on camera right. Post processing includes my usual routine of skin cleanup and some d&b to enhance highlight and shadow Here are a few shots that I like:

Fitness test shoot

Doing test shoots is a great way to try out new ideas and refine existing techniques. To take advantage of the warm weather as the summer winds down, I decided to setup a quick test shoot at a nearby park with Melody, a local model from MM. What I did not realize was how short the day light hours has become and so we end up shooting in the dark most of the time. For the shot below, I had Melody doing a stretch pose on the bridge. I had one light in front and one light behind her. The post processing involves mostly dodging and burning to bring out the highlight and shadow. Also adjusting the sky to make the cloud look more dramatic.

Rogers Cup 2012

This past week, I had a chance to cover the 2012 Rogers Cup at the Rexall Centre. Despite residing in Toronto for many years, this is my first time attending this tennis tournament. The men’s final was a sold out game, with many Serbian fans cheering for Novak Djokovic, who is currently ranked number two in the world behind Roger Federer of Spain.
